Rottela Synthetic

Post by dealerschoice »

I have always used Rottela 15w-40 in my diesel engines. I was just wondering if anyone is using a Synthetic motor oil in their diesels. If the oil is being changed every hundred hours I'm not sure it's practical to spend the extra money. I also notice the Rotella Synthetic is a 5w-40. Thanks for the comments. My diesel guy recommended Rotella 15W-40. so that is what I will use.

I don't have diesels, so no direct experience. Since you are in SC waters without our cold weather, I would think you would want to stick with the 15W-40 instead of going to the 5W-40. Changing every 100 hours you would also not see any benefit from the synthetic. Don't most of the diesel builders recommend 200 hour changes? Al P.S. You might want to take a look at this site. A lot of info there & a quick perusal on the boat forum showed most were adamant against using a 5W-40 oil in a marine engine. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

Al... I don't know how much time you spend on your computer, but it seems any time someone here has a problem or question you have a good web site to refer us to. I move we make you the site's honorary web site source chief! Hope you and Callie had a great Christmas, and lets all hope for a safe and prosperous 2010!

I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a tree removal service and a lot of his heavy eqpt is diesel powered some 3208s in particular. He says to switch from conventional to syn late in a diesels life is very dangerous because of the agressive detergents in syn. They will break loose deposits in the system and clog oil galleries etc. hope that helps. rotella conventioinal is the way to go I say. Oil weight is the question for me!

Cummins recommends 15w-40 so that's what I use. I know Bill Dunlop and Frank Price are doing the same.
