What is the advantage to this unit over the three knob unit? I would like to get better fan speeds, especially lower ones! As well as a thermostat that shuts the unit off when the temp is reached. Does this unit do this? Do they offer it in a shape that will drop in to the old 3 knob's spot?

YES YES YES, its a great inexpensive upgrade to an antiquated fixture on the boat. You like VCR's or DVD's better?

When you actually pull the trigger & purchase the item from Defender, you get an e-mail bak in about 5 minutes telling you that your order has been cancelled because it's only available with the Mermaid purchase. Nice try anyway! Joe Tomaini 1988 Sportfish Attitude Adjustment II Fort Lauderdale, FL

Keith, I dont know which boat you have but the swap to the FX-1 on the early model SF is really easy. The wire connectors are located under the range (you can see them thru the vent next to the control pannel). Lift up the range and match the wire colors or follow the install instructions. It's only about eight wires if I recall. The control pannel needs to be ordered along with the mounting pannel that is the same size as the original 3 knob pannel. If you look at the interior slide show from my recent interior makeover you can see it is mounted in the same postion as the original in one or two the the galley photo's. I had all the problems most have had with the old control pannel and all those issues go away with this upgrade. One of the easier yet very good improvments you can make.

Cliff thanks for the info. I have a FBC the 3 knob panel is on the wall heading down the steps to the VBirth. So make sure that I order the mounting panel, other than that the swap out is easy.

Yeah, I think I'm going to do it anyway. Just burned up another water pump from running constantly. With the new A/C on the bridge it gets quite cold down below, even throttled way down. Joe Tomaini 1988 Sportfish Attitude Adjustment II Fort Lauderdale, FL
