New London, CT to Boston

I am going to be moving my boat from New London, CT to Boston Harbor. I am thinking of doing this within the next couple of weekends. Any info or helpfull hints you may have on the trip would be appreciated. I am also finalizing where I am going to store the boat and keep it next summer. I am going to be living in Charlestown so any recomendations are greatly appreciated. I have never boated in a big city area, I am looking forward to the new experience.

Doug, No I am not, although that would be a pretty sweet assignment! I am actually resigning from the Navy. I will continue in a reserve unit somewhere in the Boston area. I just got married in the begining of sept, and she lives in Charlestown. I will be moving up there and starting a job in the foxboro area.

Congrats on the wedding. Welcome to the fellowship of the miserable. How many days are you planning on taking to make the trip? You could probably make it in one, but 2 would be more comfortable. I'd make sure to bring spare fuel filters. Are you keeping the boat at the Navy Yard? Too bad you didn't get married last year. You could have left the boat where you bought it. I think you'll like the area though. There's a lot of local support with me, Bill Dunlop, Frank Price, Ron Callahan, Al Lupone, Brian Jordan, and Rick Schaefer all in the area.

Doug, I am planning on two day for the trip. I think I will try to make it through or towards the end of the canal on the first day and then finish up the next. It all depends how early I can get out, either Friday or Saturday. I do have extra primary and secondary fuel filters onboard, any reason you specifically mention to have them for this trip vice any other? I am not sure if the Navy yard has an area for me to keep the boat there. I will have to look into it. It will be nice to have the boat up there and try to get involved in some of the get togethers!

Matt, Either Point Independence Yacht Club or Onset Bay Marina is a nice place to stay on the Buzzard's Bay side. From there its only an hour or so through the canal and then another hour and half to Boston. I always carry extra fuel filters. There's a marina right where the Navy Yard is. That's where Ron keeps his boat. Where are you planning on keeping yours?

Matt, I'll be taking my boat up to Danvers from Falmouth in 2 - 3 weeks. If the stars align, try to go through Buzzards Bay at Low tide. That way, you'll ride the tide all the way to Boston. Looking at the tide chart for cape cod canal, if I stay in Onset Bay Saturday Oct 23rd and get going early on Sunday Oct 24th it will be a low tide in the canal at 5am that Sunday. So I should have the current with me. Is that right Rick? It seems a little late and if I get good weather on the 16th I may pull the trigger. Depending on when I go I may try to stay in Sandwich if the tides will work in my favor that way. I believe I saw Ron's boat a couple of weeks ago. I think the marina he keeps it at is called Shipyard Quarters. I am planning on wet storing the boat at Admirals Hill marina for the winter, but I am still looking for a place in the summer. The wife wants a place where you can see the city and is not far from Charlestown. I have some time but would like to take advantage of the early sign up discounts.

Matt, That's right. Incoming tide = flow West to East in the CC Canal. The actual high & low tides in the Canal are a little skewed, but that's how it works. For Oct 24th, it looks like you'd want to want to enter the canal after 6:30 AM. For a long term set up you may want to consider joining Charlesgate Yacht Club. I went there for the first time this summer. Nice location and great people: http://www.charlesgateyc.org/ Also, if you think you'll be in the Boston area long term (15-20 years), you may want to think about joining Palmer's Cove Yacht Club in Salem, MA. Bill Dunlop and I both keep our boats here: http://www.pcyc-salem.com/index.html Its a long wait list for a slip (probably 10 years) and yard storage (probably 14 years), but its dirt cheap once you're in. My marina fees are $12 per foot for the whole season and yard storage is $9 per foot. All in with my dues and minimums is around $1,100 per year. If Al and Frank Price had joined way back when they'd be half way to a slip by now.

Rick, I didnt necessarily retire yet! I wish I had 20 in. I have been commissioned for about 6.5+ years now. I plan on finishing off the rest in the reserve. Those look like nice places. I am kind of in limbo with where I will be long term. I figure I will be moving out of Charlestown in about a year or so and moving a little bit south and west of the city but only by about 30 minutes or so. For next summer boston/charlestown in the place for me, but after that I am thinking something in the Quincy area. That is long term but I am always looking for suggestions. Thanks guys!

In onset stay at PIYC. If you are looking for nightlife you may want to consider zecco in Wareham as it is in Wareham center! Or Pope's island in new Bedford so you can go to the foxy lady!!!!
