Exhaust for Cummins repower
Exhaust for Cummins repower
We are finishing up the exhaust system as part of the Cummins 6BTA repower. Cummins wants us to install surge tubes as well as a few other modifications. We have an idea as to how we can make it work but would really like to hear/see from others who have done this already. The port engine is a design challenge. Can anyone share photos of their exhaust hose hookup and run on their Cummins boats? Thanks in advance. Rob Marsh rob@wyerivermarine.com

Is the port side tough due to the proximity of the elbow to the surge chamber? If your hose is too rigid try the Vetus exhaust hose. I used it and it is much more flexible than the Shields etc. PYacht in Annapolis has the best price and service on Vetus as they are the East coast distributor.

Surge tubes and dry exhaust runs with a shower head at the end are best but I've had the original Cummins wet elbows on my boat now for 8 years and no problems. The most important thing is to keep it a constant downhill run which I'm sure your guy knows. On the port side, it's not too hard to make a dry 90 degree , go up a bit and over, then come down to the surge tube with the shower head. It would have to be supported with that much weight out there. The general consensus out there is that with mufflers, you don't need surge tubes but all that stuff is good if you can do it. The fact is, there's enough of a down hill and enough height above the water line to not really be a problem.

Frank, Thanks for your comments. Any chance you can email me a few photos of your port exhaust run out of the back of the engine? Tony Athens from Seaboard has a great setup but I'd like to avoid the $3,500.00 costs if possible. I think I can manage that. The pics you have are what is really the best setup for the long haul. Cummins may not approve of the wet elbow running in a constant downhill from the turbo. It's always better if you can go up before turning back down. I'll see about getting a pic or two to you.
