6bta idle speed on one engine?

Post by Justin »

Hello all, can anyone offer any input on what I can expect for idle speed on one engine? I am repowering this fall with 370s and trying to decide if I need the trolling valves. I have the 33 FBC. Salmon fishing in the Great Lakes requires less than 2.5 knots

Different boat and motors. 35 Bert with 3116’s 350 hp cats, ZF 1 1/2 to 1.Thought that I could run on one for bass fishing. Boat wants to go in circles could get it down to abour 4 knots ( on one) into the current apout 5 knots with the tide ,, tried everything for a few years and finally installed 2 trolling valves , would have been better and cheaper to have done it with the repowerb

I am not sure if you have a B35 or B33, All my personal experience is with my B33, but what follows should be a good guide for you if you decide to build your own rudders, and save a bunch of money. Any local machine shop/fabricator should be able to build them. First, I am going to go out on a limb and say that while I respect yacht designers and all they do, IMHO rudder design can be a rather simple matter. Without going over all the correspondence between myself and "Chum Bucket" (Kevin) in this forum a couple of years ago, I suggest you use the link below as a starting point. When I bought my B33 it's rudders had been replaced with oversized custom build ones. I have zero problems running straight on a single side. CB wanted better single engine control and he decided to build his own. Check the second page of this string…… http://www.bertram33.com/forum/topic.as ... ms=rudders If you need detailed info on Kevin’s rudders I am sure he would be able to provide the dimensions he used. If you can’t reach him drop me an email and I might be able to help.

Hi Justin, Sorry I haven't sent you any pics yet. Haven't had the time to get into the engine room yet. I'm with the guys above. Its hard to get the boat to go straight on one engine with the Cummins.

Thanks for the info guys. Since slowing down is the objective, I’ll probably just add the trolling valves. I like Frank’s rudder modifications but I’m gonna hold off on any bottom work till I run the boat. No worries Doug, I still have to find the gears. Doug, Frank had mentioned what trouble it is to work on the raw water pumps. Do you have the originals or did you upgrade them to the seaboard marine design?

I have the sea board pumps, but the problem isn't with the pumps themselves, but how they're located in reference to the engine mounts. Mine is not an issue because of either how my installer did the job, or because my engines are really old. I'll bet Frank Price could answer that question for me though!

Doug, Your pumps are accessible because the port side motor mount is custom made. The stock cummins mounts are nice but they make it impossible to change the water pump without removing the mount itself, which means that you have to support the engine while you do it...Not really a tough job but so unnecessary if it were engineered properly.

I haven't upgraded to the newer style pumps so I still have to remove the port aft engine mount arm to change the pumps. I carry an assortment of 2" thick and 1" thick wood blocks with me, along with a small hydraulic bottle jack to raise and shore up the port aft engine mounting arm. I have onboard a spare rebuilt Johnson pump and several spare rubber impellors and gaskets as well. (These days I only use the impellors with the threaded insert so I can easily back the impellors off the pump shaft without having to rig some type of homemade puller, which is a major PITA.)
