Next Project - Bow Pulpit, etc.

Post by captgene »

2007 New Engines. 2008 the Anchor Wench says no more pulling anchors. So I got a new Delta for Christmas! Now I need to get a Pulpit and a windlass. Pulpit. Glass-Tech must be doing well, because they won't return phonecalls or e-mail. Talked to Danny at High Tide. He said they use the same mold as Glass-Tech. $2500 with the rail section. I did look at George's set up. Glass-Tech did his, and he thought they made the best one. Anybody else have one made that they like? For rode I'm going with 5/8 Brait and 20 ft. 5/16 chain. Probably the Lewmar free drop windless. I don't like hover anchoring. Miss the spot too much. George, has the Maxwell windless, which was very nice. What other setups are out there that you guys like? Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC

Hi Gene, I installed the Lewmar free-drop this spring. I had a Goode windlass before. I may be able to save you from my mistakes. Here is my configuration. I have an aluminum pulpit that is of a layered configuration inside. There was a hole from the Goode and some other holes from previous windlasses (before me). Also, the solenoid and wiring was already in place in the rope locker. Additionally, the rope locker had a plywood floor glassed in and varnished. It sat at the level of just below the forward bulkhead access hatch. Rather shallow. I tried to cut a few corners. As far as the pulpit, I opened up the holes so that I would have the required 3" hole for the Lewmar. It was irregular in shape, and while I tried to smooth things off, it was not without sharp places. More on this later. The other shortcut was to defy all of the cautions in the instructions and I mounted the new controller in the rope locker so as to save relocating and rewiring. This voids the warranty since the controller is labeled not water proof. Rather silly for them to give you a non water proof controller. I mounted it as far up and as far outboard as I could on the bulkhead on the rope locker side. So far this has been ok. The "hole story" has not worked out so well. I also bought the Lewmar rode (200' of 9/16th three strand and 20' of 5/16th chain. Almost from the first use I had problems with the rode fouling on the gypsy because the input was so fast and something was offering resistance to the line flowing into the locker. Then it would get sent back out of the hole and be taken up by the gypsy unit until it all jammed. I learned how to free it up (the hard way). I initially thought it was because the floor of the rope locker was too shallow. I even cut out the floor. These things are very powerful. In an attempt to free up yet another jam, my finger got sucked up into the gypsy and I ended up with a dozen stitches. I'll spare you all the details of that adventure. I now think I have a diagnosis and a treatment for the problem. In discussing this with a Lewmar guy, he casually mentioned how it is important to have a "smooth hole" for the rode to flow through. Until then I had not really thought about that. In investigating I could see that it was possible for the rode to snag small burrs on the aluminum as it passed through the pulpit. I'm pretty sure that is the problem. My solution is to remove the unit, redrill a 3.5 inch hole and instdall a 3" i.d./ 3.5 " o.d. PVC pipe as a liner. This is my next winter project. Should be soon since after by last cod fishing trip last week, I think it's over (no fish where they will let you fish). So now I can remove the unit and get started. I'll keep you posted. I think I will like this Lewmar when I get the installation correct. I think all of these problems are related to the installation, not the unit. Ron

Ron, good information. I had one of those Goode windless on one of my previous boats. What a POS. I took it off and threw it overboard. I though about glassing in a PVC pipe to have a smooth bore. Sounds like this is the recommended approach. Have it pass all the way through the pulpit and the deck. I have no tray in the rope locker. i think it should fall as far as possible as not to stack up and jam the windless. Never thought of a Aluminum pulpit. Do you like it? But I would like to see how you like that Lewmar after you fix the hole problem. Is yours the Profish 1000? Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC

Yes its a Pro-fish 1000. Aluminum is Ok but I would not use it if I were starting out. Hard to work with, hold paint, etc. We'll see what happens when I get the PVC in.

Yeah, I bought 2 new Pompanette helm seats there a few years ago. A 3 step transom ladder, guages, etc. I know they have pulpits, but I'm leary about their quality and the way they fit. They have to fit into the toe rail and deck on the Bertram. I don't want to do a lot of retro fit. I'm not that good. Drill holes, add support is about all I want to do. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. For years now i have been wanting to install a pulpit on my 35. Been to glass-tech twice to see the item and to try some negotiations about buying just the pulpit. 4 years ago they wanted 1100 just for the pulpit. I have been watching on ebay since and nothing compares to glass tech's pulpit. Their quality is next to none in my opinion but i cant bring myself to spending that much for a pulpit. I'll keep looking for a used one. If anyone knows where a used one is please let me know. Pete

George, Yes this is DIY. Soon as I recover from Christmas , maybe I can afford to get started. I plan on taking another look at your's to refresh myself on exactly where it is bolted through, and support under the deck. If I use the Lewmar free drop, I won't get as good of rear support as you did installing the Maxwell. Probably need a couple bolts in the rear too. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. Those alternatives still work like a charm, but they're not always around ! I use mine the most in the fall when we're chunking....and they're in school. It woulds be a big project...running the wires (to replace the ones already there but too small) and making the rode locker bigger. I think if I used the one have now, I'd only be able to fit about 150' of chain and rode in there. Rick Ticket 85 SF Falmouth, MA

I have a 1986 sf and just purchased a bow pulpit from glasstech. They no longer provide the bow rail for it. Anyone have any experience or leads on having one fabricated? Looking for ideas on where to start. I’m locales in Central Florida and now our local vendors, in my experience, are lacking. Thanks Chip
