Information Nassau

Post by gskill »

We will be leaving for the Exumas in a few days and was hoping to get a little information on Nassau from anyone that may have made this trip. Some of the marinas are extremely expensive ($3.50-$4 a foot)The other issue is security. From what I have heard theft on boats is pretty wide spread on the island. Can anyone offer any suggestions on inexpensive marinas that are somewhat safe?

George, Great trip! We always stayed at Nassau Yacht Basin. I think that area has gotten pretty shady. I have a group of friends that always stay at the "resort". To pricey for me, and I don't care for that type of atmosphere either. Once you get to Exuma, Sampson is a really great spot. It is kind of pricey on the electric. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. If you're stopping over in the Nassau area, the Paradise Island side is safer. We've stayed at Paradise Harbour Club and Marina and at Hurricane Hole. Enjoy the trip. Never taken Blue Chip to the Exumas. Let us now when you're back. Jose Jaen "Blue Chip" 1993 33FBC Miami FL

Thanks for all the input. We have returned and did stay at the Bayshore Marina in Nassau with no safety issues although I was told that there were gunshots at the end of the dock one evening. The Exumas were fantastic. Gene we did not stop at Sampson however we did spend a few days at Staniel Cay. They have a great conch burger. The snorkeling and fishing were fantastic and we can't wait to return. The boat ran great although we did have some intermittent starting problems. (port engine 3208) The engine would not start and 30 min later would. This happened a number of times. I cleaned all connections on the batt, the helm as well as the starter however still had the problem. If any one has experience with this problem please give me some guidance. I had the same problem years ago with the starboard engine. I had the starter rebuilt a couple of times and finally found a bad connection in the helm start switch. Gene I believe you installed the Maxwell 800 windless. We did have a problem with it and had to haul my CQR and chain by hand. I replaced some parts and it should be repaired. Thanks for the leads on Nassau. If you do stay there, the Poop Deck is a must. It's a good place to fuel ($3.71 per gal)and gather stores however not a place that we would want to return to.

George, sounds like a great trip! Maybe we'll run into you in the lake or someplace. We're going to Bimini on Jul 11-15 with the kids. Heavy duty dive trip. We are kicking the kids off the boat and leaving on the 18th for the Abacos. I already had a issue with the Maxwell. I don't think it likes all that chain. That plastic pressure foot broke into a million pieces. I found the cheapest place online and ordered 3 more of them, so I have spares. Pretty easy to change....you just have to haul all the line out. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC 2007 8.1 Crusaders

Hi George, I recently had a similar intermittent starting problem on my Stbrd engine (3208). It turned out to be the small "start" terminal on the starter solenoid. Was badly rusted. I removed it (carefully), don't break the small connector. Try running a jumper wire from the large terminal on the small relay on top of the engine to the start terminal on the starter solenoid, and try to start from the helm. You can also try jumping the small relay itself to see if the relay is the problem. Good luck. Ron

Thanks Ron for the suggestion. All the terminals on the solenoid are clean however I so suspect the relay as I had to replace the starboard one a few years ago. I will check it out. Gene it sounds like you are going to have a great trip. We spent a week in Bimini prior to our trip to the Exumas. We are heading for the keys in July (not in the boat)and will be spending a couple of weeks. I would appreciate the name of the place that you purchased the Maxwell parts from. I ended up buying the parts from BOW who ordered from Lewis Marine. The kit came with the bushing and foot. ($23) I already had the pressure arm assembly. This was the only repair problem I have had since purchasing the windless 5 years ago. I have 25' of chain and the only issue I've had is it slips sometimes at the splice.
