I've posted these before, but the old links don't work anymore. I think a proper marine paint can hold up well. Let's see if these come out. Al

Al, I like the look of the white with the wood trim. It keeps the appearance of original with a new Bertram look. I would like to do something similar with my 83 SF. Was the paint a 2 part epoxy? What manufacture's system? Did you spray it on? Any wear and tear issue's? What is the prep for the application? Thanks Cliff Schultz

Cliff, I used Toplac. If I were doing it today, I would probably use Interlux Perfection. I'm strictly an amateur. First, I filled all the old screw holes. One small panel had 39 holes to be filled.I used several coats of primer, sanding between each coat. The side panels I did at home in what is supposed to be my living room. (Do a search on dust nits) It was all done with a paint brush. Tried a roller, but the paint would start dragging before I could tip it off. After it was all done, I then wet sanded up to 2000 grit & then buffed it out with 3M Imperial. If you have the same old formica, you will have to sand the hell out of it before the primer. It is amazing how rough that stuff is. Al

Why not put new veneer right over the old?

I did not want any seams showing. I would have had to buy 5 x 12' sheets of formica & they were special order & expensive. Plus, I could not find a white laminate I liked. I also considered using real wood veneer. That got reeeaaal pricey. I have a port side galley & a lower stb helm. They are still original & I may do a wood veneer on them. Al

Thanks for the heads up Al. Yes the old formica is quite rough, I guess to give it some sort of grain effect. It is utilitarian but amazing how well it stands up over the years, but it is ugly!!! I guess we all agonize over how we can change the interior without breaking the bank while at the same time ending up with a finish that will actually be an improvement. My boat is original without any changes/additions or attempted improvements. I would like to make sure that anything I do to it would be of a quality improvment. Thanks again. Cliff

Schultz.... I am also getting ready to start an interior rebuild of my '83 FBC.. the previous owner hacked up a lot of things.. and his "improvements" only devalued the boat, even his broker admitted that to me during the negotiation phase. Prime examples.. He installed 3/4" Bruce self adhesive stained oak flooring he bought on sale from Home Depot in the main cabin. The curved raw edges around the hatches he cut with a sabre saw, and without sanding he applied shoe polish to them so they would "blend in". He also filled the area behind the windshield with home made Grade C-D plywood cabinets he built, which would be an embarassment to a first year high school shop student. This left lots of holes everywhere. I must either refill the holes and repaint, or cover these areas with formica or wood veneer. I have seen Al's (Lobsta1) paint job over his formica, and it is beautiful! I would love to have a purely original boat to redo.. but I bought at the right price and slowly I will bring the boat back to it's glory. I went to the B33 Rendezvous in Plymouth, MA, several weeks ago (drove since it was much too far to take my boat) and was humbled by the condition mine is in compared to the boats there, but this did serve to give me both ideas and determination! I will post comments and pics from time to time (if it is possible here, as I still believe the original picture posting functions are out of service). Stay tuned.. the fun is about to begin! Frank, Thanks for sharing. I looked at dozens of boats before I lucked out and found a pristine 33SF. I can relate to comments about Home Depot flooring I saw much of the same during the search. The sad part is that almost anything looks pretty good in a photo. When seen in person it almost make you cry that someone screwed up a boat so bad. Glad to hear Al's project looks so good. Perhaps lots of hard work and time is a good alternative in this case. Hope all of your projects go well and you will be able to share the results with all of us. Cliff Schultz

They make a special primmer for painting over formica, which you can buy at Sherwin Williams. It is a thick white paint, but I have done this and had no problems with peeling paint after using it. You have to clean the surface well first, then apply the primmer, let it dry and paint with what ever color you choose. It is like painting the outside it's all about the prep work. [;)] The salesman at the paint store should be able to hook you up with the correct product, just tell him you are wanting to pain formica. If you do not use primer the paint will peel every time. Thanks Rissa.. I will keep this in mind. I feel sometimes here in Wilmington, NC, I am out in the boondocks because we don't have all the stores and suppliers I had access to in Boston, but there are several Sherwin Williams stores here. Did you brush or spray when you applied the top coat? And how many top coats do you recommend? Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Thanks Ed.. Looks like a great site, and they have an operation only a couple of hours from me! I might take a trip out there and see what they have in stock. Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC Frank I am a bit slow replying to you, sorry bout that. The product I used was called Prep Rite Anchor Bond. I brushed it on. I think it only took one coat, but it has been a while since I painted with it. I have a friend that lives in Wilmington. I just noticed you were there. I like that area myself. You guys have more bad storms than we do though. lol Marissa DeWitt "Miss Missy" Ocala, FL 1977 33 FBC

You guys are the best...I am buying my first Bertram in march and my wife is a little turned off by the interior. What I have read in this post will most certainly provide me with the knowledge and resources to get the interior to her specs!
