Could be a few things. Timing, lugging engines (props), injectors to mention a few

It's standard 3208 Cats. It's a pain to scrub it off every time but if not it builds up. 3208 cats smoke a little even if they are running perfect. Head over to boatdiesel.com for more information. Lots of good articles.

Assuming you don't have a engine issue causing excessive black exhaust, I would clean my hull really well and then apply at least 2 coats of Rejex. This is really good stuff and makes washing off the black much easier.

My 3208's smoke black when the air filters get marginal. I only use the CAT foam filters, paper filters will deteriorate in rather short time. You can check by removing a filter or loosening it and seeing if the black smoke goes away. Removing completely could be risky because you wouldn't want something to get into the turbo. You will always get some grey smoke. I only get black smoke under normal circumstances if I run hard WOT which is very rarely or need to clean the bottom. If it's smoking under normal running you may also see a reduction in top RPM. I hope some of this helps
