yet another AC question

so the 35 i bought has a slight ac issue. the compressor on the v berth unit is cycling and not cooling. I am almost positive that the compressor is low on freon. it is a r22 compressor. I have done quite a bit of work on 134a systems on cars and fixed the fridge on by bertram 28 after my son decided to defrost the freezer with an icepick and punched a hole in the freon passages in the coldplate of the freezer... so my question is.... next weekend i am going to try adding some unicorn blood (r22, but they cost about the same)...... if that does not do the trick what are my options... can i not just get a new compressor unit for the engine room and replace it leaving the reciever/fan up under the flybridge? I am seeing as in the other thread self contained units for half of what the compressor costs. why can i not just put a unit up in there and sue the same vents, etc?

FYI. The airhandler in the fly bridge is for the salon. The vee berth has a separate unit behind the pegboard in the ccloset

thanks butch and cptn frank im driving up and staying on the boat this weekend so i will have time to dissasemble, measure, etc... im thinking now that maybe a self contained unit in the closet will be the easiest. i think a 6K would work for vberth head... am i correct?

The problem I see with putting the self contained in the same spot as the evap unit for the v berth is running the cooling water that far forward. Other than that, it shouldn’t be much different. 6k will definitely be sufficient for the v berth and head.

It's a split gas system. Best bet is to just replace the conpresssor in its original loacation. It will be best in the long run. I was originally designed as split stystem for a reason. Likely noise and distance of required cooling water.

Rather han start a new thread, I’ll continue this one. Looking to replace the AC units in the boat with a new self contained. I know normally not supposed to install in the engine compartment for fear of exhaust gases contaminating the air and being bad and what not. But if I plan to never use the the ac except for when I’m on shore power and engines secured, does anyone see doing against this? Generator was in the after compartment but came out on a ball of rust and have no intention of replacing it. I cleared out a space where the old water heater used to be and was thinking of using that space. (Was OOC upon purchase of the boat) Just reaching out for some input. Right now this all preliminary in design and installation. Thanks for your thought for and against the idea.

Hey George, First, how ya been man?! Second, I wouldn’t put it in the engine room. If you ever decide the sell that will be an obvious discrepancy on the survey that you would have to later fix anyway. My insurance provider requires a survey every 5 years so it may become a problem sooner rather than later. I know one of the Franks on here installed one forward of the under sink area and was able to get into the space by removing the pegboard behind the standing locker on the port side. This was on a 1980 Bert so I’m unsure of your configuration.

Asher, Good buddy! Holding down the district energy system on Baltimore! How is Buckshots rehab going? I’ve looked at the space under the sink. Plenty of room and could punch the supply vent through the side berth foot board probably. But unsure where I would put the return vent louvre. Still all in the preliminary process. I understand the after thought of he ac in he engine room now.
