Sold my boat

Post by buzzk »

It’s a sad day today. I sold my boat yesterday but I hadn’t been using her much and it was time.

Thanks Joe. 33 Bertrams are bargains for what you get. If anyone is interested in selling there was a lot of real interest in my boat and I'm not talking about just tire kickers. I only advertised it for a month on Craigslist. The Bertram just didn't fit my lifestyle anymore. I needed something that I could fish off the beach by myself. Funny thing about my situation if I had sold my 24 Carolina Skiff my entire would family would have revolted. I'm buying a Regulator nice boat but not near as much boat as the Bertram.

So true Buzz and it's sad to hear that it's gone. My day will probably come in the next 2 to 3 years as I'd love to get into some kind of an express. But thanks for all of your contributions over the years. I can't say exactly what, but I know there's a part of Buzz on Ticket as I've read so many of your posts. It's been fun, hope you love the new boat and have a great Summer. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Bittersweet I’m sure. Enjoy the new ride and good luck in the quest to purchase it.

Buzz and Rob Congratulations to both of you! Buzz.. Many years ago you and I were both looking for a B33 at the same time, and I found two in Charleston. I called both brokers to set up appointments to view each of them, with agreement to meet on a particular day with one in the morning and the other after lunch. When I called the first broker on the agreed upon day to set up the morning meeting details he told me that he had shown the boat to you the day before and you had agreed to buy it, and had left a deposit with him. Later that day I saw the other boat and ultimately bought it. So.. but for the quirks of the calendar and timing I could have owned your boat and just sold it to Rob. Rob... I hope you enjoy and take good care of "Buzz Off". She was almost mine!

Thanks Frank, I bought a 26' Regulator. At this time in my life it's a better fit. Are you using your boat much? I believe I only used the boat about 30 hours in the last 2 years. It was time to sell. Rob has plans to improve the boat and really use it. I think he'll really enjoy it.

Off topic but does anyone here know who’s 33 sf went down going out of Oregon Inlet near the bridge? I saw pictures of it on the Coast Guards feed on Facebook a couple days ago.

I don't know the owner, don't know if it's true but I read that it was inshore charter boat. That's one nasty inlet.

Buzz, glad to see your boat sold. I was considering it as a lateral move to get into a diesel 33 but with a new house renovation and my dock being taken away by the winter storms that plan is being pushed back. Taking the cover off Retriever this week though.

Good morning, Happy I am. I started with a 37 and after much research found Buzz's 33 to be a better cared for boat with better engines, electronics and most important care and feeding. I used to run racing sailboats and used a facebook group of former paid crew to find a retired yacht broker from Florida who lived in Morehead City. He took a quick look, met Buzz and told me I was on the right track. I visited Buzz on my way back from a motorcycling event in Tennessee. The boat was what I expected and after meeting Buzz I was comfortable with the owner too. I stopped in Cape May and looked at the 37 we got stated with one more time. When I left I thought the 37 was the boat for us. The transom door and center island queen are very appealing. When I got home I contacted a local surveyor and when I mentioned it had Detroits he made all sorts of cautionary comments. Every time I mentioned Detroits I got the same response and coming from the person who I was going to hire for the survey before he even saw the boat iced it; I was not buying the 37. Buzz's price was far and his representation of the boat was honest and accurate. I never felt any reason to discuss the price. I contacted a surveyor and he recommended a Cummins guy. Both were fantastic. The surveyor also used to race sailboats offshore and we had both sailed with the same owner so that was fun. He did an excellent survey and gave me a good list of things to pay attention to going forward. When I walked him to his car he congratulated me on my due diligence and we agreed I had found a good solid boat. The mechanic liked the engines and pointed out some updates (fuel cooler) Buzz had done. Both agreed with my assessment that the boat would be fine for a trip north. I flew down last Sunday to get the boat with ( Buzz will never believe this) my father in law. As a humorous aside my father in law and I are one year apart in age, that's a story for a dock party... I had an on-line order waiting at West Marine, followed this up with a stop at Lowes for some tools and wally world for some food (not enough!) and down to the boat we went. We left Sunday afternoon for a short run up to Oriental, NC to get to know the boat. Monday the plan was to go to Coinjock for the night but we got an early start, made better progress than anticipated and made it to Portsmouth, VA. The forecast for the VA, DE shore was nasty, 15-20kts out of the NE with 5-6' seas at 9 seconds. Up the Chesapeake we went for a lovely night in Annapolis. It was lumpy and nasty coming out of Norfolk but as I told Greg the further into the bay we got the better it would be. We got in before the fuel dock closed and enjoyed happy hour and dinner downtown. Wednesday the plan was Atlantic City or perhaps Sandy Hook. We left Annapolis at 05:30 and were in Cape May by 11 which was when NOAA forecast called for the end of small craft warnings. That run was glass smooth and fast. When we arrived in Cape May there were a few boats hanging out waiting for the fog to lift and the weather to improve; their run down the Delaware Bay the day before was reported to be very rough, while run up the Chesapeake was quite nice. What a difference a day can make. The forecast for Thursday was worse with 25+ out of the SW and larger seas. I told Greg we might hang out for a few hours and the best conditions according to forecast were for later in the day and overnight. That thought lasted about 15 minutes as the wind direction started to shift so off we went into the fog. Soon after I noted two targets on the radar; the two at the dock decided to follow. I enjoyed a chuckle because one of the followers was on a band new (can't remember what) really fancy boat with every toy know to man (infrared night vision too!) and he was using Commanders Weather for his forecasting yet it took some guy in a 30 year old Bertram to give him courage. As expected the fog cleared as we went North and the seas flattened out as well. Again we made great time and it became apparent we could make it thought New York in the early evening and be in Greenwich by dark. Manhattan and the east river are pretty amazing, i.e. viewing the Statue of Liberty, the financial district and the United Nations by water is pretty cool. I'v done it a bunch but it was Greg's first time which is why I pushed on. We were rewarded with a beautiful evening and a unexpected dinner with free dockspace at a swanky yacht club courtesy of my brother. He went to Wall street, I went to work on boats. Annapolis to Greenwich, Ct in just about 14 hours including an hour in Cape May. I'm falling in love with my Bertram. With only 60 miles left on the trip yesterday we got up and took an Uber to breakfast; our first "proper" breakfast of the trip. No I don't want another ham sandwich for breakfast. For a 60 mile run this was the most stressful of the trip. Visibility was often a quarter mile with light rain. No matter how much folks work "glass" into the name of their product there is nothing like being in a pilot house with real glass and wipers for being able to see. It took quite a bit for me to get comfortable looking through plastic and we kept one side up for an unobstructed view. Again thanks to Buzz making good choices in his gear I was able to navigate in zero visibility with no issues other than self-inflicted stress. We got to the boat's new home by 11, fueled up and put Buzzoff; now known as Traveler in her new home. This left plenty of time for Greg to take me to West Marine and the hardware store, send Greg home and give the boat a good scrubbing before my wife came down to pick me up. All in all a fantastic trip and super way to get to know and bond with my new boat. Sunday I'm taking my wife across the sound. I looked at a few 33's. One was "owned by the father of the guy that owns the boatyard." If I were him I would tell the broker to stop saying that as after looking at the boat I didn't even want to use the bathroom in this "boatyard." I saw a boat in Rhode Island where the bilges were awlgripped and it had a $5,000 *antenna* for the radar. Overdone in every way for only 120k but you get to keep the hugely bent bow rails. No thanks. Is my new boat perfect? What boat is but it's perfect for me. It has the right engines, the right electronics and most importantly it was owned by the right guy prior to me. What has to work, works and works well. I'm looking forward to many happy times on Traveler and I'll always have a fond memories of dealing with Buzz to make it all real. If you ever happen to see the fine vessel Traveler do say hello. You will undoubtedly be offered a sip of rum 'cuz I'm a sailor at heart and that's what we drink.

Rob, I'm glad you had a wonderful trip. Seeing New York from the water is beautiful. When I told you I would get on the boat and take it anywhere I wasn't kidding. I know with the improvements you are planning you'll love the boat even more. Congrats on your new boat.
